Dead Flowers Cut Back

Mon, 14 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Guest: I have at least a thousand irises in my yard that need to have the dead flowers cut back. Do you have any suggestions on an easier way to cut these back other than individually? I like the look of the grassy foliage during the summer so I try to cut back the stalks right after they bloom. Since there are so many it is very time consuming. If I cut back the entire plant would the grass grow back quickly? Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions you might have.

Answer By The Flower Expert:When all Iris blooms are spent, allow the stem to die back on its own. Then you can easily pluck the dried ones. Iris need to be divided and replanted every 3-5 yrs, the best time is in July or later after blooming. This energieses the bulbs. If your plants are old, then dig up your rhizomes and cut away the new parts, discarding the old. Plant the IRis rhizomes 18-24 inches apart pointing the fans of leaves away from each other. You can plant in a circular group. For quicker mass flowers, plant iris clumps in set of 3 closer together (8-10 inches). Cut the Iris leaves to 1/3 of their full height. Mulch for the winter.

Angelonia Angustifolia

Mon, 14 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Ralph: I have planted four barrels of angelonia angustifolia. One barrel is doing great, and on the others, the leaves are turning brown, and then the plants are dying. I was wondering if there might be something I could put on them to stop this. Sure hope you can help me out on this one.

Answer By The Flower Expert: The angelonia angustifolia plants yellow leaves, brown spots and curly leaves is because of a deficiency of nutrients.
These brown leaf edges that are indicative of heat stress.
If there is also the high level of nutrients accumulation in the leaves, it causes them to dry out and burn up.
Do not overfertilize and overwater. Probably if the leafspots occur for the whole plant, it has very meagre chances of surivival.

Honeysuckle in Greece

Sun, 13 Jun 2010 09:25:09 GMT

I have recently returned from a holiday on the Mani peninsula of Greece. A common site was a honeysuckle with large white petals and a large spray of fine purple stamens. The flowers seemed to last the morning only. Can anyone help me identify this plant?
