morning glory-ancient Japan

Fri, 25 Jun 2010 11:50:03 GMT

Years ago I took an art class which included the story about a leading Japanese grower of morning glories. He was internationally famous. When asked by a group of admirers to see his garden, he refused to show them until the next day. Upon arriving the next day he ushered them to his garden, where he had cut down ALL the flowers except one, THE QUEEN OF THE GARDEN. True story? His name ? When?

By Anita Karen Gray: Something is eating my marigolds. Could it be rabbits? They are stripped down right to the stems.

Potted Daffodils

Wed, 23 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Joan: Do potted daffodils need to be dug out of the pot and stored till fall planting? OR may I just leave them in the pot in a cool dark shed?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Potted daffodils can be handled in 2 methods. They can be planted in the garden in the spring, but they take 2 to 3 years for bulbs to come back after being forced indoors.
Another method is to store them over summer and plant them in the fall. To store them remove spent flowers to prevent forming seeds, and let the foliage die back naturally. Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Then, when the foliage dies, quit watering and let soil dry out. You can store them in a cool dry place and plant them in fall.

Freesias

Wed, 16 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Jackie Wilks: I live in the south of Spain. I have grown Freesias in pots on my terrace successfully but wish to transplant them to a garden bed. They are obviously very dry now but I wonder what is the best time to transplant the corms. In fact, any tips on how to do this would be much appreciated.
I also have a Strelitzia in a large pot on the terrace, it is about 5 years old now and, whilst I know that they like being in a clump together, I am beginning to think that they should b separated and replanted, as the flowers are not nearly as good as they used to be. How should I go about this, please.

Answer By The Flower Expert: Freesias - After the blooming has finished, you can transplant freesia plants to outdoor gardens.
Strelitzia -
Divide your Bird of Paradise after removing it from the pot.
Separate the roots coming from each division, cut between the two plant sections with a clean, sharp knife.
Dust the fresh cuts with a rooting hormone, such as 'Roottone'.
Repot each section in a sterile pot, using a good commercial potting soil, as they are rootbound.
Do not water the plants for 2-3 days.
Give moderate watering.
Give an all purpose fertilizer next spring, and watch them grow.
Your Strelitzias would be blooming again profusely in the following year.

Anthurium Scherzerianum

Wed, 16 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Guest: I have a Anthurium scherzerianum for many years which has grown and which produces may flowers often but recently the leaves, which are very green, have developed dead areas indicated by a mark which resembles a "cut in to the leaf" or some of the surface of the leaf is missing toward the middle aspect of the leaf, not along the edge. Does this indicate a need to repot the plant to a larger pot? Please advise.

Answer By The Flower Expert: Probably the age factor might be the cause for the cuts in the leafs of anthurium.
Though, you can detect the cause and use these fungicides for the below problems.
Thrips - Use Diazinon, malithion
scale and mealybugs - Use malithion
anthracnose diseases of the spadices - capton fungicide.- Use 1 teaspoon of fungicide for 1 gallon of water.

Dead Flowers Cut Back

Mon, 14 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Guest: I have at least a thousand irises in my yard that need to have the dead flowers cut back. Do you have any suggestions on an easier way to cut these back other than individually? I like the look of the grassy foliage during the summer so I try to cut back the stalks right after they bloom. Since there are so many it is very time consuming. If I cut back the entire plant would the grass grow back quickly? Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions you might have.

Answer By The Flower Expert:When all Iris blooms are spent, allow the stem to die back on its own. Then you can easily pluck the dried ones. Iris need to be divided and replanted every 3-5 yrs, the best time is in July or later after blooming. This energieses the bulbs. If your plants are old, then dig up your rhizomes and cut away the new parts, discarding the old. Plant the IRis rhizomes 18-24 inches apart pointing the fans of leaves away from each other. You can plant in a circular group. For quicker mass flowers, plant iris clumps in set of 3 closer together (8-10 inches). Cut the Iris leaves to 1/3 of their full height. Mulch for the winter.

Angelonia Angustifolia

Mon, 14 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Ralph: I have planted four barrels of angelonia angustifolia. One barrel is doing great, and on the others, the leaves are turning brown, and then the plants are dying. I was wondering if there might be something I could put on them to stop this. Sure hope you can help me out on this one.

Answer By The Flower Expert: The angelonia angustifolia plants yellow leaves, brown spots and curly leaves is because of a deficiency of nutrients.
These brown leaf edges that are indicative of heat stress.
If there is also the high level of nutrients accumulation in the leaves, it causes them to dry out and burn up.
Do not overfertilize and overwater. Probably if the leafspots occur for the whole plant, it has very meagre chances of surivival.

Dormant Stage

Fri, 11 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Guest:My bulb collection is getting to be too much work for me. I try to share with friends and neighbors, but they are not interested in the dormant stage some plants require. I live in the North Carolina foothills zone 7. We rarely have temperatures as low as zone chart indicates. I have a brick front porch, somewhat protected by roof overhang. The sun sets on this side of house and receives full afternoon sun. The brick absorbs some warmth. I have a foundation bed planted along here. Should I chance leaving calla lilies and Hymenocallis narcissiflora in the ground over the winter, if well mulched?

Answer By The Flower Expert: These calla lilies and Hymenocallis narcissiflora flowering bulbs should be dug in early fall and stored over winter for replanting the following spring.

Even flowers without scent produce and spread their pollen which can cause allergies. The flowers without scent are a difficult one. Instead of flowers, you can have nonscented foliage of ferns, horsetail, cattails.

Beautiful White And Pink Tulip

Wed, 09 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Ken Shapley: Hi, my mother has found a beautiful wite and pink tulip with seven full heads on a single stem. She is wondering if this maybe of interest to bulb growers? Can it be reproduced or is this not possible? Basically can she sell it is the question I think she is asking.

Answer By The Flower Expert: Generally, Yes, there are some varieties in Tulips, where there are multi flowers 4-7 flowers per stem. Like, heweri tulip, a multi headed with 2-3 flowers per stem, native of Iraq with a glowing yellow and a red flush on the outside petals. And Tulip Candy Club a violet flush and edges, 4-5 per stem brilliantly colored large flowers, which are tall, bunch flowering tulips.

So, in my view, yours might be some variety like this one, and ofcourse this would be of some interest to bulb growers.

Purple/pink Flowers

Wed, 09 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Dorothy: I was wondering if you could settle an argument for me. I have Heather in my garden. They are now small plants with little purple/pink flowers on them which are finishing up now. Is Heather considered a bush, shrub, plant, etc. and what is the difference between the three. It is important for me to know this. I have seen them mentioned as different things.

Answer By The Flower Expert: Trees are woody plants more than 6 m tall, with a dominant stem, or trunk, and a definite crown shape. Generally, any nonflowering and flowering plants are called as plants. IF they are huge they would be called as trees, and if they are small (a few meters in length,) they would be called as shrubs. If these shrubs have a medicinal value they would be termed as herbs.

So, here Heathers are called as shrubs (generally they are 2-3 feet), as they are less than 5-6 meters in height.

Tue, 08 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Glenn Daugherity: I have black spots on my bird of paridise plant. Is this normal for this time of year?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Probably it might be a Leaf Spot disease on a bird of paradise plant. IT is caused by fungi or bacteria. Brown or black spots and patches may be ragged or circular, with a water soaked or yellow-edged appearance. The major culprit helping to develop this may be Insects, rain, dirty garden tools, or even people. Yes, it is a normal thing for a plant to develop disease, and have symptoms.

Gerbera Daisies

Mon, 07 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Guest: I have a strange question regarding Gerbera Daisies. I have many plants that keep returning year after year, most likely from seed. But this year I had one come back that started producing more flowers than normal. I have seen plants with 5 or 6 flowers at a time before but nothing like this. This particular plant has sprouted 23 flowers that are all open at once. And there are at least 10 to 15 more blooms coming up now too. How did I get this to happen? I want to reproduce this one.

Answer By The Flower Expert: Though its a rare thing, you can very well reproduce Gerbera Daisies, atleast you can try your luck. After the flowers fade away, that is flowering is finished, collect the seeds from the flowers. You can store them and plant them during favourable conditions, as they need high temps and high humidity to germinate. The seeds should get about 8 hours of sun a day and the temp should never fall below 68 F.

Pansys

Mon, 07 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Phyllis Ames: Do pansys continue to bloom all summer?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Pansies are growing in gardens during the winter in the South or Southwest and during the summer in the North. Pansies grow for many years.

Pansies are a cool weather plants. Though they survive much of the summer with plenty of watering and a semi-shady location, if placed in a hot location they may not last.

It is seen that pansies generally do not live through the summer, unless the plant is in a very mild, northern climate with cool summers. In hotter places pansies get killed by the end of May.

Jacaranda Trees

Thu, 03 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Malcolm and Marie: The Jacaranda trees we planted nine years ago have never produced blooms, they produce a healthy leaf one tree looks stronger than the other. Do you have any advice we live in the western Algarve surrounded by pine trees and mimosa trees.

Gardeners do not seem to have any knowledge here, yet the Jacaranda flourishes by the side of the road in dusty dry areas with no attention. We welcome any advice.

Answer By The Flower Expert: Jacaranda trees will flower only when they are past 5 years old.

They need to have consistent moist soil in order to flourish. Also, they require a lot of sun.

The amount of flowers produced each year is dependant on the warmth of the summer.

Jacaranda do not tolerate frost.

In my view, the trees non blooming nature can be because they are overshadowed by other trees, as well as they are surrounded by pine and mimosa trees. Or Frost might be the culprit.

Sending Flowers to Italy

Wed, 02 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Pat: My parents are Italian and their anniversary was coming up. I wanted to send flowers. I began a search of flowers from Italy on the internet. It showed that the white lily was the national flower. (It actually read one of three) Who has three national flowers for their individual country? ? ? Then began a search I wish I'd never gone on. Once I found 'white lily, I found a million variations. At this point I was seriously thinking about sending them a gift card to a restaurant and be done with the whole stinkin' thing. So, after I tossed that idea, I enlarged the picture of the white lily, copied it onto glossy cardstock, bought a beautiful frame and when the picture in it, it was stunning. Here's my question : does Italy even have a national flower, and if so, what is it? I so appreciate any and all help you can give me.

Answer By The Flower Expert: It is said that Stylized Lily is the national flower for Italy. We do not have any picture of the flower. Though you can try the most traditional flowers used for gifting in Italy are Orange -Tree Flower, White Lily, Violet, White Yellow And Pink Roses.

Answer By The Flower Expert: Plant the gladiolus in the place in your garden where the sun remains for part or most of the day. That means they need full sunlight.
