Frangipani

Tue, 01 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Theresa Mckoy: I live in New York City and would like to know when Frangipani is in bloom, and will I be able to grow this fragrant plant in Queens, NY?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Frangipani, OR plumeria is a tropical flowering shrub, a tender tropical which does not tolerate frost. It goes dormant or become damaged in sustained temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. It performs well with daytime temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the temperatures of your place match with the above temperatures, then there is a chance of growing Frangipanis there. If there is frost then they will not survive.

Predators

Tue, 01 Jun 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Tom Dorst: I have been treating my brown snail problem with methaldehyde and wanted to know how long I should wait before introducing predator snails. Or does it matter, will the predators be unaffected by the methaldehyde.

Answer By The Flower Expert: You should not use your predator snails - Rumina decollata, family Subulinidae, at this stage, if the trees are young in age. These predator snails are introduced when the plant or trees get established.

These brown garden snails are pests for the young avacado trees. So, there is no need to use the predator snails for your problem. The brown garden snail is specially seen a problem following wet winters and springs.

You can use bands of copper foil wrapped around the trees, creating a barrier with copper strips around delicate areas of your garden or keep copper tape on larger plants.

Infact, Iron phosphate - pesticide - is an enenvironmentally friendly pesticide and according to the EPA, to deal with snails. Snails stop feeding and die within 3 to 6 days after consuming iron phosphate laced bait.
