Beautiful Daffodils and Tulips

Wed, 26 May 2010 05:00:00 GMT

By Martha:I have had beautiful daffodils and tulips for many years, but this year a lot of the buds are drying up and turning brown before they open. Some of the bulbs are old, while others are only one or two years old. Can someone help me? Do I need to dig them all up and discard them?

Answer By The Flower Expert: I think, it is better to throw off the old bulbs and keep the younger bulbs. This is because of a condition called "bud blast" that can abort bulb flowers. One of the cause may be overcrowding. You can just dig up your bulbs later in spring and divide them before replanting.

Hyacinth Bulbs

By Guest: Can I store my hyacinth bulbs over the summer in a bag until Fall planting?

Answer By The Flower Expert: Let the Hyacinth foliage wilt down and then clearing the bulbs store it. The best way to store them is in a mesh bag or paper bag with holes that permit ventilation. Keep it in a cool dry place until fall, then plant it again.

vccm (very cold climet mama)

Tue, 25 May 2010 18:46:23 GMT

We moved from the central valley to a much colder area(1 hr shy of the oregon border)a two years ago. Here it is the end of May and we are still having freezing temps at times and light snow from time to time! Anyway,I've only planted small flowers before. Now, I'd like to plant an area of by back yard that has no lawn into a large flower area (about 25'x20'). It's all sun most of the day with the exception of the shad in the afternoon under a willow tree. The dranage is good but the area was built up when the old owner built the home. So I must build up the flower beds to meet the lawn level (about 4-5"). Can anyone tell a new flower gardner what to use to do this. I hope to add grave paths through it to take up some space. Also easy bushy plants & shrubs that can live through freezing winters. Thanks. vccm
